Three modern homes measuring under 65 square metres, each styled in their own very unique and lively character. Our first home has a mid century modern spirit with a bright and breezy mix of furniture, and a beautiful glass bedroom design under wooden arches. Tour number two shows how soul warming an earthy textured palette can be, and comes complete with inspirational mood boards for each individual room of the apartment. Lastly we tour a minimalist interior design that’s uplifted with a bright red and blue accented colour scheme, where combined space demonstrates how even small floor plans can pull off a relaxed flow.

Firewood & Candlesdesigned by Rachcoff Vella Architecture is a project that pays elemental homage to a previous life. Rachcoff Vella set out to retain the raw and utilitarian nature of an agricultural building balanced with calm tones of a main ridge dawn. Photography by Tatjana Plitt.

.

The building envelope of concrete block walls retain the raw agricultural nature of the former dairy. The insertions within this envelope are joinery and furniture which are of a hand-made nature and are offset with a homogenous wash of calm muted grey tone stains and paints applied to re-used and reclaimed timbers. An intentional approach to reminisce about the rawness and beauty of a previous quintessential Australian architectural typology.
Nestled within the occupants are wrapped up by the soft internal underbelly, firewood burning alight, this inconspicuous outbuilding glows like a candle flickering in the distant winter mist.
Interior elements are layered against the more structured, utilizing natural colours and textures as seen in the clay, timber, coir and linens.
The bathroom pays homage to the dairy ‘coolroom’ offering a deliberate departure of crisp white awakening for an invigorating start to the day……warmed up by the rising morning sun at the higher level.
Bedrooms are a soft muted colour palette that offsets the dramatic tones of the Australian bush it is surrounded by. Offering shade and comfort from the harsh summer sun or shelter and protection during colder winter months, this cottage is about refuge and protection.

Firewood & Candles is a private sanctuary that echoes the lyrics of the Paul Kelly song bearing the same name:
“Firewood and candles
Making shadows on the wall
Is that the gods come to Earth?
Or a mule kicking in a stall.
Making these memories
Forever gonna keep us more,
When firewood and candles disappear in the storm.”

7 Gerard comprises a three-story structure on the North Shore of Long Island

Just weeks after first opening its doors, 7 Gerard was forced to temporarily close—like so many establishments across the U.S. and beyond—due to COVID-19 safety measures and restrictions. However, the restaurant has since reopened and is operating full steam ahead with outdoor seating, socially distant indoor tables, and a reconfigured, more space-conscious bar in the bustling suburban Long Island town of Huntington, New York.

7 Gerard was a true labor of love for interior designer and local resident Eileen Kathryn Boyd, who is also a co-owner of the eatery. “I wanted to create the feeling of an action-packed visual experience that guests want to be a part of from the minute they walk in the door,” Boyd explains. “Think Parisian bistro meets chic SoHo lounge meets art gallery.” Boyd executed her vision by devising several seating arrangements spread across the restaurant’s three floors, including high-top tables to perch, convivial areas for large groups, and a communal farm table with views of the open kitchen.

In order to unite the multilevel space, which Boyd compares to a large townhouse, artwork was commissioned and sourced to produce a unique yet visually cohesive atmosphere from floor to floor. The black metal and glass-clad staircase, for instance, acts as the centerpiece and connector with a floor-to-ceiling custom graffiti mural by local painter Diego Garcia that “pulls your eye up to the soaring ceilings,” upon entering, says Boyd.

The third floor of the restaurant is crafted with a residential-inspired spirit

The double-height main dining area is flooded with natural light via metal-paned warehouse windows. A chic-yet-industrial vibe continues on to the second level, where a black metal wall with divets sets the scene for a Studio 54-inspired bar area, and abstract paintings by Manhattan-based artist Kerry Irvine hang within a cozy seating nook.

Perfect for intimate private gatherings, the loft-like third level features slanted ceilings and eyebrow windows. Banquette seating and wood tables are installed against an antiqued mirror backdrop, while black accent walls are home to color graphic artworks. To the other side, a whitewashed brick fireplace offers warmth and further promotes a residential feel.

“So many times, you don’t get to experience a project and the environment you created after you have designed it,” says Boyd, “but this one is different—it has been an amazing journey to be the designer and owner-operator of a restaurant.”

The palatial coffee shop Felix Roasting Co. has opened in New York City’s chic SoHo neighborhood. Following the brand’s debut in Midtown Manhattan in 2018, the new location draws inspiration from its downtown zip code through a grandiose interior design by bicoastal decorator Ken Fulk.

The 1,500-square-foot spaces comprises four distinct zones for sipping and working, distinguished by lattice archways and exposed rose-toned brick walls beneath glass chandeliers. Apothecary cabinets hosts Felix beans and other grab-and-go items, while the coffee bar showcases custom cladding. Beyond the bar, communal tables promote coworking and a lounge invites leisurely sipping upon curved banquettes. Maximalist elements, like radiant green and pink floors and floral wallpaper, echo themes from the flagship as well. A relaxed alfresco space is also featured.

Taj Rishikesh Resort & Spa blends into its surroundings in the foothills of the Himalayas

For developer Arjun Mehra, the acquisition of farmland overlooking a double bend of the Ganges river in northern India proved personal. It was here, more than a century ago, that his great grandmother undertook an arduous pilgrimage through the narrow paths etched into the foothills of the Himalayas that wind their way from Rishikesh up to the temple town of Badrinath. Mehra says he found it “nostalgic, humbling, and invigorating” to delve into the vernacular of Himalayan settlements in Uttarakhand State and beyond—which ultimately underpinned his vision for the Taj Rishikesh Resort & Spa.

In collaboration with Canadian architecture firm YH2, which developed the masterplan and concept, and Singapore-based design firm eco.id, Mumbai’s Edifice Consultants translated that vision into reality. “During his research, Arjun gleaned profound respect for a symbiotic and sustainable way of living with nature,” says Baskaran Kolathu, head of design for Edifice’s hospitality vertical. “His desire that the resort embody these values demonstrates both a respect for the environment and a commitment to superior design.”

A serene seating area is framed by expansive glass windows that show off dramatic vistas

Many of these ideas find a voice in the rustic and refined palette, with Canadian and Indian wood complementing stone cladding and slate roofs. The elevated Welcome House, for example, is a cantilevered structure set around a courtyard and characterized by a feature staircase that is enclosed in a diamond-patterned screen mirroring indigenous Himalayan wool hats. “Due to the majestic setting, we adopted a rustic minimalism in the public areas that encourages contemplation of the physical beauty all around,” says eco.id director Boon Yang Sim. “We did this by looking at materials and colors that complement the [landscape] but lend modernity and freshness to the design.”

As the stepped site cascades to the emerald waters of the holy river, flat terraces provide an organic platform for five villas and the pared-down pavilions housing the spa and yoga facilities. “These spaces contrast the pristine, untouched parts of the terrain and hues of calming green bathed in diffused sunlight,” describes Kolathu. “An infinity pool at the base of the project blurs the line between natural and manmade, seemingly colliding over the horizon to the pounding waves of the river and verdant mountains.”
