Technological lightness, versatility, innovation. Since 1979 these have been the overriding values of Alias, one of the most consolidated names of Italian design. Values that have driven the firm’s close association with some renowned designer signatures. Collaborations that have developed and grown through the years, and in the course of which, Alias has managed to reveal the peculiar talent of each designer. Conducted in an ongoing exchange of suggestions and ideas, and a constantly open-minded approach to the use of new materials and technological experimentation. Of particular significance is the solid industrial structure of a firm that controls each phase of the process, from design, to production and distribution. Alias, located in Grumello del Monte, close to Bergamo, can now count on a distribution network of around 1000 stores in 50 countries throughout the world. In 2008, the first Alias flagship store was opened in Milan on corso Monforte 19; it is a striking two-storey structure that houses the company’s entire production and its design research. All Alias products, with their highly expressive minimal style, offer solutions to the various requirements of residential, contract and outdoor applications. Products offering constant evolution to meet the real needs of contemporary living and working environments.


Seventies And Eighties

Alias’ story began in 1979 with Giandomenico Belotti’s “spaghetti chair”, a chair which was one of Alias’ first creations to become part of the MoMA collection in New York.


The poetics of lightness find expression in Riccardo Blumer’s “laleggera chair”, winner of the “Design Preis Schweiz” in 1997 and the “Compasso d’Oro” in 1998. Alias added further solutions for the home and office environments with “SEC” (1996-97), a modular shelf system to create practically an endless amount of different compositions, designed by Alfredo Häberli.


The partnership with Alberto Meda had a new, significant impulse, with the development of the frame concept proposing: in this period the “rollingframe” (2001) and “meetingframe” (2002) armchairs and the “frametable” (2003) were launched. The company’s design and materials research reached an important point in 2004 with “layout”, a system of containers designed by Michele De Lucchi. 2007 marked the extension of the outdoor range, with: “plein air” by Alfredo Häberli, “teak” by Alberto Meda and “open system” by James Irvine. The offer was completed with “ghisa” designed by Riccardo Blumer, and the “dehors” collection of armchairs and sofas by Michele De Lucchi. In 2009, Alias extended its range of tables with the “biplane” collection by Alberto Meda and the “stabiles” collection by Alfredo Häberli. Furthermore the research of new design for chairs continues with the office chair “norma” by Michele De Lucchi. Home/Gym/Office marks the debut of Philippe Starck with Eugeni Quitllet in the wellness domain and the start of prosperous partnership between Alias and the ingenious French designer. The Salone del Mobile presented the ideal occasion for launching the “Mezzo Terra Mezzo Mare” project by Michelangelo Pistoletto in collaboration with Juan E.Sandoval: six different seas were painted by the two artists on 248 “laleggera” chairs. The 2010 year is characterized by new projects: the “sandal” collection by Jakob Timpe, the “green pvc” outdoor collection by Giandomenico Belotti, the “cross” tables by Alfredo Häberli and the ergonomic seat “dinamica” by Riccardo Blumer and Matteo Borghi.


In 2011 Alias returned with new product to the exhibition “Salone” in Milan. The chair „tagliatelle“ by Jasper Morrison and „hydrochair“ by Alberto & Francesco Meda. The coat-rack „to’taime“ by Starck+Quillet, the modular shelf „Loggia“ by Jakob Timpe, the modular table „TEC“ by Alfredo Häberli and the upholstery „eleven“ by PearsonLloyd. Furthermore Alias released the chair „manzù“ designed by the genius protagonist of the Italian car design of the sixties, Pio Manzù. The installation designed for the Salone del Mobile by Architects Renato Stauffacher and Andrea Sanguineti, received an Honourable Mention at the XXIII Golden Compass Award.


At the 2012 Furniture Show, the star role went to “elle”, the seat collection designed by Eugeni Quitllet (Honourable Mention at the XXII Golden Compass Award), and “kobi” by Patrick Norguet. Tow interpretations of the rigid shell seat that take their cue from 1950 design. “elle” gives new form to the aesthetics of Scandinavian inspired enveloping chairs and achieves a minimalist effect by making use of lighter lines. “kobi” follows in the tradition of wire chairs where the shell becomes a basket, rigorous and comfortable, made of welded intertwined steel rods. Equally interesting was “aline”, the extruded aluminium bookcase designed by Dante Bonuccelli. This modular architectural project is characterised by a clean, extra light structure that seems to defy the laws of physics. Thus, the books become the undisputed protagonists in any room. The great innovation lies in having added an angular joint that makes it possible to create a variety of geometric configurations, open and closed sections, interesting combinations.


In 2013 Alias unveiled “tessiletto”, styled by Alfredo Häberli. This extremely contemporary project uses a number of modules comprised of interchangeable elements that may be combined into many different configurations. With its linear design, this bed is an evolved, padded version of “legnoletto”, the wooden bed designed by Häberli in 2001. The Swiss designer of Argentine origin also played a leading role in the seat section, where he presented “erice” and its padded version “enna”. With these designs, Alias reproposed the graphic clarity of “segesta” and “selinunte”, through a new form endowed with a strong personality. Also of interest was the new swinging mechanism, with a remarkable high-tech content, that was added to the “frame” collection designed by Alberto Meda, making for a wider choice of versions. Finally, the “laleggera” collection was significantly expanded with the choice of leather or eco-leather upholstery mated to soft foamed polyurethane for enhanced comfort. 2013 was also the year of “Sette alla Seconda”, an exhibition of the work by seven photographers to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the iconic “seconda“ chair, designed by Mario Botta for Alias in 1982.


In 2014 Alias decided to get across its vision of home design by underscoring the inextricable ties between man, nature and project. Brand new products and new interpretations of some iconic pieces by the brand are displayed at the Furniture Show in an extraordinary setting: a mysterious installation styled by Blumerandfriends, which uses 15 hyperbolic fir wood columns to take the visitors on an unprecedented journey to the future of home design. Among the proposals: “tabu”, the collection of chairs and tables by Eugeni Quitllet, reinterprets the tradition of high craftsmanship; “kayak”, a technically complex project by Patrick Norguet, is characterised by a comfortable chair, very pleasing to the eye and very stable; “ago”, the table styled by Alfredo Häberli, was created by combining three traditional materials – wood, glass and metal – into a well balanced configuration. Moreover, 2014 was the year of colour for Alias, that selected a number of its highly successful collections – “laleggera” , “ilvolo”, “frame”, “biplane”, “stabiles”, “aline” – and presented them in new colour variants. New elements inspired by the every day life and represented by timeless design.


In 2015, Alias presents two new projects: the “saen” tables by Gabriele and Oscar Buratti whose central base melds elegance of design with material refinement, and the “twig” chairs by Nendo with an aluminium base and seat in different shapes and materials. Alias comes up with three new contract solutions: the historical “frame” collection by Alberto Meda has been extended to comprise a soft variant with a comfortable new cushion, the “eleven” sofas by Pearson Lloyd are complemented by side and back panels in the high back version and the “kayak” by Patrick Norguet acquires a soft cushion. The collections of more recent release can also boast a number of new models: the “kobi” by Patrick Norguet becomes a rocking chair with an oscillating base, the “tabu” chair by Eugeni Quitllet is presented with a new backrest in ash and Plexiglass. The historical “spaghetti” chair by Giandomenico Belotti is celebrated by Alfredo Häberli with 7 limited edition versions in an engaging itinerant exhibition.


In 2016 Alias is attending three important fairs, IMM Cologne, Salone del Mobile in Milan and ORGATEC showing a new scenario: the stand which will accompany Alias through the forthcoming design events, starting from IMM Cologne 2016, is a rather special architectural project and a decisive element of corporate strategy destined to embody the most deeply rooted “spirit” and values of the brand.
