UK design studio Other Side has collaborated with Caravan Restaurants on the design of its latest outpost in the heart of London’s Canary Wharf. The restrained 120-seat all-day concept embodies the brand’s core values with an effortlessly cool and laidback ambiance.
“We wanted Caravan Canary Wharf to feel like an urban idyllic retreat, a space away from the bustle of the business district,” says Other Side founder Gavin Mayaveram. “A simple neutral palette of natural and raw materials is warmed up with Palm Springs-inspired finishes and textures. We added lush green tropical plants within the dividing walls and around the periphery of the site to add texture and to create this sanctuary-like feel.”
Earthy and lime render walls and sandy terrazzo concrete floors line the interior beneath original exposed ceilings, while a timber framework complements seating upholstered in textured green and warm gray fabrics. Blockwork walls and raw concrete columns are also featured, forming a backdrop for furniture comprising of handcrafted bleached ash and woven cane. Classic rattan chairs and barstools also echo the bespoke cane ceilings in the private dining room, where full-height sliding screens instill intimacy.
Reclaimed upholstered chairs in the main dining room are paired with bespoke concrete tables detailed with exposed pebbles and stones, while a central bank of upholstered booths informs the choreography of the space. Perforated brass wall lights and woven pendants round out the experience as they cast soft shadows across the raw palette. Suspended pendants, table lights, and exposed lamps support a seamless transition from day to night as well.
