The Singapore studio of Wilson Associates has completed the design of the latest addition to Marriott International’s Autograph Collection. Located east of Waters Takeshiba—Tokyo’s central business district—the Mesm Tokyo, Autograph Collection is the brand’s second Japanese property.

The property, which includes 265 guestrooms and suites, is crafted to evoke “kando,” or the feeling of deep satisfaction. “Kando is an emotional and spiritual involvement,” says Leonard Lee, regional managing director of Wilson Associates’ Singapore and Tokyo offices. “It is the spirit of being able to connect with our guests and elicit a deep and elusive emotional response. It is our constant pursuit to create interior spaces that engage sensory perceptions—It is what touches you rather than what you can see.”

The hotel also draws inspiration from the organic movements of the surrounding Takeshiba waterfront and Hamarikyu Garden to further provide a pervasive multisensory experience, which begins in the two-story indoor-outdoor lobby. A balance between cultural tradition and modern innovation is struck with a range of large-scale artworks that reference nature punctuate the interior against a backdrop of geometric tiles. An animated communal table anchors the heart of the lobby to promote social interaction, while a smoky gray marble path leads visitors further into the hotel, where soft forms and tactile textures juxtapose the overall architectural language.

As for onsite F&B options, Whisk is populated by casual lounge-style seating options and a marble bar, while Chef’s Theatre channels ancient Japanese Kabuki in a modern, artful setting.

Each of the accommodations at Mesm Tokyo underscore a meticulous dedication to unexpected forms of luxury. Inviting tones and intricate detailing frame sweeping views of the nearby park and Tokyo Bay. In addition to a bespoke entryway console, all rooms feature an overhanging tree on the bulkhead located above the lounge area to pay homage to the small pavilions found in the Hamarikyu Garden.
